چکیده

There is a general lack of awareness for the influence of users ́ personality traits on human-agent-interaction (HAI). Numerous studies do not even consider explanatory variables like age and gender although they are easily accessible. The present study focuses on explaining the occurrence of social effects in HAI. Apart from the original manipulation of the study we assessed the users ́ personality traits. Results show that participants ́ personality traits influenced their subjective feeling after the interaction, as well as their evaluation of the virtual character and their actual behavior. From the various personality traits those traits which relate to persistent behavioral patterns in social contact (agreeableness, extraversion, approach avoidance, self-efficacy in monitoring others, shyness, public self-consciousness) were found to be predictive, whereas other personality traits and gender and age did not affect the evaluation. Results suggest that personality traits are better predictors for the evaluation outcome than the actual behavior of the agent as it has been manipulated in the experiment. Implications for research on and development of virtual agents are

Developing Pathematic Agents

Assuming that personality is the regular and consistent expression of emotions, theories of emotions can be used to provide synthetic actors with personality, therefore achieving higher levels of believability. Supported by this assumption, we developed a methodology based on the connguration of synthetic actors elements , which structure is based on Ortony, Clore, and Collins theory of emotion...

Emotional Communication with Virtual Humans

In this paper, we present our approach to modelling perceptive 3D virtual characters with emotion and personality. The characters are powered by a dialogue system that consists of a large set of basic interactions between the user and the computer. These interactions are encoded in finite state machines. The system is integrated with an expression recognition system, that tracks a user’s face i...

Exploiting Models of Personality and Emotions to Control the Behavior of Animated Interactive Agents

The German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) recently started three new projects1 to advance our understanding of the fundamental technology required to drive the social behaviour of interactive animated agents. This initiative has been timed to catch the current wave of research and commercial interest in the field of lifelike characters [1] and affective user interfaces [14,2...

Perceiving Bodily Expressions: Differential Effects of Human & Non-human Forms

Theories in embodied cognitive science emphasize the importance of self-other mapping during emotion perception. This implies the body form through which an emotion is expressed may impact how the emotion is perceived. Research in human computer interaction has demonstrated that people can reliably label emotions of virtual characters; however, it has hardly examined how people perceive the emo...
